Legal and business letters and papers of four generations of the Johnston family, starting with William, a linen weaver who emigrated from Ireland to Augusta Co., Va.; his son, Zachariah, Revolutionary War soldier and Virginia legislator; and Zachariah's sons Thomas and John. Subjects represented include land and legal matters in 18th century Virginia, economic conditions in Virginia, the militia, and local and national political developments following the Revolution. Includes William's commonplace book begun in Ireland, 1717, and continued by Zachariah until the 1780s, and diary (1794) of travel in Kentucky.
